What is SEO, anyway?

back to blog

So, you’ve been hearing about SEO, but don’t really know what it stands for or what it means for your small business marketing strategy.

You’re in the right place, friend.

Let’s break down what SEO even is and why you absolutely need it as the foundation of your marketing strategy.

What does SEO stand for?

SEO = Search Engine Optimization

What is “Search Engine Optimization”?

It’s the process of making your website and your content easier for Google (and other search engines like it) to understand.

What is SEO in marketing?

In the marketing world, SEO is often referred to when we talk about your website and its content. You might hear people say things like “you need SEO for your website” or “the content is optimized for SEO”.

When we talk about SEO in marketing, we’re talking about the process of finding keywords related to your business and using those keywords in your website content to make it easier for Google to find you.

SEO is super important in marketing because you want Google to be able to understand what your website is about so it can serve your site pages in search results when people search for what you offer.

TLDR; SEO helps your website be more valuable because there’s no point in having a website if no one can find it.

What is SEO optimization?

SEO optimization is a fancy way to say that you’re putting keywords in the right place on your website.

When we optimize your content or your website for SEO, we’re putting keywords in specific places – like your Title Tag, Meta Description and Headers – to make sure Google’s robots can understand the topic of each page of your website.

What is SEO for websites?

SEO for websites refers to a few different things:

  1. SEO-Friendly Website Designs

Not all website designs are created equal. It’s important to make sure your website has key SEO elements that make it easy for Google to read what’s on your pages. So, having an SEO-friendly website design means you have those key elements in place on your website.

  1. SEO Optimized Content

Having optimized content on your website means that keywords have been worked into your website copy. These keywords make it easier for Google to understand what your content is about, making it more likely for your website to become the answer to your dream client’s question.

  1. SEO Strategy

Your SEO strategy is the plan you follow with your keywords. Usually, SEO strategies are designed for your sales funnel – meaning keywords are chosen based on what part of the buying process people are in when they search for them.

Having an SEO strategy in place helps you understand:

  • What pages you need to have on your website
  • What questions you need to answer within your page copy
  • How people search for what you offer
  • What type of content you should create to answer more questions

Why SEO Matters in Marketing

Bottom line – SEO helps you understand how your dream clients are searching for what you offer and gives you the chance to show up as their solution.

Bonus: SEO keywords help you take the guesswork out of what to say.
